[Staring directly into the eye on the glitch on the dex]

“Hello, how are you?”

(WARNING: EYESTRAIN, UNREALITY)

You call out, staring deep into the eye of the horror.

Although this is just a scan- or, an attempt at one- you can still feel it staring back at you.

The stare gets deeper, and deeper. Like you’re sinking; slowly drifting downwards, into the abyss. You shiver, as though the cold dark of the sea was touching your skin. It’s glare slices through you, and beyond you, forever.

You try to look away, but you can’t move your eyes. They begin to sting. The taste of salt fills your mouth.

You sink further. It’s gaze breaches the surface, but you only fall deeper and deeper. A wave of sorrow washes over you. Your heart feels heavy in your chest, every beat a challenge. It only gets darker, and you lose track of your surroundings. Your extremities go numb.

The eye looks back. But this time, it engulfs your vision, and you begin to feel as though you are being lifted from your body. You are filled with a dream-like euphoria, and float higher and higher. You feel as though you are drifting to sleep, and you close your eyes, settling into a death-like slumber. All goes numb. You float, shapeless and thoughtless for what feels like forever.

Like breaching the surface, you feel a wave of cold air hit your wet skin. You recognize the feeling and remember leaving the womb, breathing your first breath of fresh air and drinking the last drop of your mothers’ blood, before a doctor severs the connection between you and the darkness from which you came. You begin to softly cry.

You open your eyes, and you are exactly where you started. Seated before the professor’s computer, staring at the screen.

There is nothing but an absence.

You click on the two buttons in succession, popping up two windows on the screen.

Looks like the “Camera” button takes a snapshot of whatever’s currently being recorded, displaying it in a window for closer viewing. The other one isn’t a recording button though- You’ve finally found where the archived footage gets stored!

You turn on the radio. It’s already dialed to 18.5, Kantos music station, the previously quiet lab now filled with cheerful music.

The time ticks towards the scan, the camera fogging for a moment before a small pulse goes out, remapping the area for the camera in brilliant green. Makes sense- that far down, the camera probably has to readjust to the darkness every few minutes.

Looks like you missed it- Seems like it’s probably a recurring thing though! The next one is in a few minutes- long enough for you to fond that archived footage, probably.

While it doesn’t work, it does feel closer than some of your other guesses have been, though why is a mystery.

Given the label, it’s probably to smother any accidental fires that happen. Makes sense- there’s probably a decent risk of fire in a place like this, especially with Blaines specialty being fire pokemon.

Your assumption seems right on the money- There’s a small desk lamp, a square wooden box, and a pair of books. One is “Moby Dick”, the spine featuring an embossed wailord just below the title. The other is “10,000 hotheaded riddles”, by “B. Akai”.

Looking closer, the box has a lock on the front with a unlabled 3x4 keypad, and a note on a sticky note settled in the inlay on top.

You poke around, but there doesn’t really seem like much of interest here. Some stationary supplies, spare labcoats in a couple different sizes, spare paper, printer ink and a bucket of sand. You can’t open the trunk- the clasps are a bit too complicated for the drones wings to do anything but fumble with.

Seems pretty barebones. A pair of storage closets, a side table, a hefty trunk that looks like it was casually thrown there, and a futon in the corner that doesn’t look like it sees a lot of use. Maybe a place for people working here overnight to crash, but for the most part it looks like basic storage.

You leave the board behind and go to check out the monitors. The set up seems a little more… haphazard compared to Maples.

There’s an old wooden radio on the desk, and next to it is an old ships radar hooked up to the mess of cables dangling behind the desk.

One of the small monitors seems to be keeping track of temperatures, while the other has a scrolling list of code that moves a bit too fast for you to keep track of.

The largest monitor looks like an old thrifted tv that’s been repurposed as a desktop, ziptied cables loosely bundled and dangling from the screen.

A photo of the beach outside the lab is taped to the corner of the monitor, “Cinnabar Coast” marked on the bottom with red marker. The photo itself looks partially corrupted, details difficult to make out at a distance.

There’s several windows open- a paint file nestled behind two text files, and some kind of monitoring program that appears hooked up to an undersea camera, the current page labeled U_CAM02. It’s the same shipwreck from the image on the board.

The two text files seem pretty short. The first one is labeled To_Do.txt.

image

- buy: bandages, sticky notes, iodine15oz, D batteries (2)
- check challenge question submissions for next league cycle
- get a third camera?
- double check peak readings
- need more things to do when the cameras are uneventful

The second file, “Questions_Wip.txt” is a bit longer.

image

Some good suggestions this year! Wanted to put my thoughts down proper before talking to the youngins.
- Asking who they’re going to fight is funny as the final question, I won’t lie.
- “vs Fire move effectiveness” is a good starting point, I’d like something a bit more specific from people making suggestions though.
- the Tombstoner question gets submitted every year. Yes of course I’m including it
- Epithet questions are a fun idea, but I think it could be something a bit trickier? We’re running a late gym, after all.
- While I appreciate the creativity of those sending in encrypted suggestions, I’d like it if they were a bit more creative.

I’ve gone to the coast many times throughout my life. I’ve met her many times. Many different versions of it on this very shore.

It was a rather simple task, calling for them. Probably more simple than it seemed. Of course, you’d have to go out of your way to see her but. You’d always find them on this very shore.

I wouldn’t reccommend repeating or following these steps professor, It is something that can break minds, I’m sure you’re well aware of what you shouldn’t mess with with your bare hands

In Viridian City there’s an old man who will teach you how to catch a pokemon. You tell him your name and he will show you how. You must fly your way to Cinnibar and surf along the coast. Depending on your name. You may find her along the shore. Your eyes will buzz, as will all your electronics. Your fingers will numb and some are unlucky enough to go missing due to its effect.

Though. I just usually call them back to its ball.

Over time, you can become accustomed to the sense of electricity buzzing through your very core, the feeling of your atoms moving in and out of place the lightheadedness and nausea of all the sights and smells and feelings all at once jumbled into a mess of garbage.

And sometimes professor, you can even grow a fondness for its presence, not just for its power, but because it feels the same empty feeling you do when you first witness it.

This is a world in which nothing is as it seems. This is a world where if you do not follow your script you do not belong.

<a href="https://possiblyfunny.tumblr.com/" style="text-decoration:underline;">possiblyfunny</a>: <p>That computer is <i>very</i> tempting, but what&rsquo;s up with the bulletin board? All those notes and pictures with red yarn? That&rsquo;s gotta be something interesting&hellip;</p>

The board certainly seems to hold a few things of interest, a few sticky notes scattered around the pinned items.

Two of the sticky notes seem fairly normal- A rough pen sketch of a growlithe and a ponyta decorates one note, a phone number on another. The cluster of notes in the upper left corner are a bit more varied; a reminder to speak with “Ms. B-A” about some kind of test, Something about missing data in the champion register, and a third note thats difficult to read with the other two on top of it, the most visible part simply a mention of “Cam02”.

The three pins on the board are easily the most eye-catching, bright red yarn strung between silver pins.

The first pin is holding down a pair of papers- both appearing to be printouts from the computer behind you. One is a photo, a screenshot of what looks like a sunken wreck, something circled in the dark lower-left corner of the image. Directly under it appears to he some kind of error log, though it’s not the easiest to read with the photo pinned on top of it.

The second pin also has a picture, though it’s hard to tell what it is through the heavy artifacting, the image file clearly corrupted in some way before it was printed. The note under it is obscured, the only visible part being a signature; “-Green”.

The third pin appears to be an unfolded memo, the paper heavily burnt in places and the ink bleeding slightly. Like the other documents here, you could probably read it better if you looked at it closer.

The lights inside flicker on as the Ponyta nudges a lightswitch on the wall, hooves softly clicking against the floorboards. It lays down, watching lazily as you look around.

Immediately to the right of you is a small but unremarkable room with a large cushion and a small plush chair immedietly visible through the doorway.

In the angled wall next to that is a door and window that appear to open to a cave tunnel that leads further below ground. Funnily enough, the chair the ponyta claimed looks purposefully angled to have a good view through the window at the red stones.

To the left, its easy to see that this place appears to be equal parts laboratory and living space, an entire corner of the room taken up by a computer desk, several old monitors displaying various files and readouts- Still on despite the absence of the apparent owner of the lab. A slightly worn photo is taped to the corner of the largest monitor, and what appears to be an old ship radar sits on the desk, the green tail sweeping across the circle every couple of seconds.

On the back wall, above the kitchen counters, is a large bulletin board dotted with sticky notes, bits of paper, and photos, some connected with bits of frayed red yarn.

Ay prof, you know anything about this weird door on cinnabar?

“A door…?”

They pause a moment to think, racking their mind for something that fits the description… Then, their eyes light up.

“Oh! I think I know exactly what that is- if memory serves me right, that sounds like an entrance to Blaine Akai’s lab! I should’ve figured you run into it there- it’s posted near the ocean as he specializes in Marine research. It seems the seas out there have something all of us could be interested in seeing, hah!”

The ponyta snorts, tossing it’s mane a bit smugly before blowing a small flame onto the charred panel- the door sliding open just a moment later.

It looks back as it steps inside. Seemed like you had an invitation!

You want us to open the door sweetheart? Hmm…. I’d love to but I’m not sure if this has opposable thumbs… Maybe if we knock?

[Slightly maneuvers the drone to sorta tap on the door without damaging it]

The drone bonks against the metal door with a soft bang, making it sputter and dip in the air for a moment.

The ponyta looks up at you quizzically.

Ah! Clear water! How nice! And odd... You'd think you'd see boats or trainers sailing past... Didn't Mx. Ace mention something about a scanner...?

[Looks for anything that remotely looks like something to trigger a scanner]

There’s a brief blink in the footage as you hit the button to scan the surroundings.

When the view of the beach returns, it comes with an unexpected guest.

image

It snorts, fogging the camera with how close it is to the drone, it’s mane flickering in the afternoon sun.

The scan doesn’t seem to have pulled any useful information up, but…

SOMETHING appears available for questions, at least?

You know, you always see ✨A E S T H E T I C✨ pics of Cinnabar online, any you think it’s all just photo editing trickery, but no… It really is as pretty as the picture you see! (Unless Mx. Ace has a beauty filter on the lens, probably not but a hilarious thought!) I wonder if we can position the drone on the top of that rock… Get a better view of the water?

The rocky pillar seems fairly level on top, so it’s not too difficult to land smoothly.

Everything… seems normal?
